Dodging the showers

Today has been a bit of a mixed day weather wise. Sudden heavy rainfalls then sunshine again. Phoebe and I went out for a walk and bike ride close to the house. I put three loads of washing out but got caught out on the third lot, heavy downpour!

This field is in front of our house. Phoebe frequently runs out there when she hears the sound of the steam train approaching.

Here it is ... We often go a lot closer to the track at the bottom of the field and see the people in the carriages waving.

I LOVE having a steam train pass so close to the house. I love the sound and smell of the coal that stays in the air for a while after passing by. Nostalgia on my doorstep! Even though it goes by every weekend and in the summer every day, I never take it for granted. I appreciate it's sound and love watching it go by. I imagine that it is a scene that could easily have looked identical had I been there in the 1930's.

After having watched the train go by, Phoebe and I headed for the lane which runs parallel to the field.

We headed down the lane towards the railway bridge, where Phoebe likes to have a shout to hear the echo. She calls is echo bridge, has done since she was a toddler.

I love the cow parsley adorning the banks of country lanes

After a short walk and cycle down, we turned around and made our way back towards the house again.

Almost home

Phoebe cycling back up the lane

This beautiful embroidered picture arrived in the post today. I bought it on Ebay recently. I love the colours and detail and the fact that it is a thatched cottage scene.

I wish you all a very good weekend.

A bientôt!

That looks like a wonderful walk, I enjoyed all your photos especially all the cow parsley. There's a railway down the bottom of the road next to our house and you can see it from outside and from my daughter's window and we all love seeing a steam train too :)

How idyllic!!
We have a railway line behind our house but it is rarely used now..apart from to carry ball clay, now and again. We found the disused station recently..all gone to rack and ruin..very sad!
It looks so lovely where you live ;-)

It looks lovely in the lanes around where you live. Oh my, the two boys in my house would love those steam trains passing by, I'm sure I'd lose them for whole days to the bottom of the field!

I am going to take the children on the steam train at Cranmore, I love steam trains.. do you think we would live a much simpler life if we hadn't invented such fast modes of transport?

If a train trip or a boat trip or even a car trip took longer do you think we would take time to notice our surroundings... interact with the people around us?

take care
Alex

PS I think you may already have this award. However, I believe it was Meryl Streep who said "You can't have too many Oscars!"

What beautiful photos :)

I completely understand about the smell of the train. To this day, the smell of diesel on a cold morning reminds me of waiting for the bus at the bottom of our road.

The embroidery is lovely and makes a perfect picture for your blog.

How is Larry progressing? Well I hope!

I can't believe how beautiful your surrounds are. I've missed coming by to see you. I haven't had the time lately because of work and wanted to not be rushed because I so enjoy your posts. We were so busy this weekend and I needed the wonderful and peaceful feeling I get after read your blog. I'm not sure if we have cow parsley here though we have something similar that has cropped up that seems to be choking other weeds out. Maybe not such a good weed.
